Is Voss Rafting Worth the Investment for Your Norway Trip?

Worth it for confident swimmers seeking real whitewater

Voss rafting is not a cheap add-on to a fjord holiday, and the honest case for it rests on what the guiding actually buys. Entry to the base at Nedkvitnesvegen 25 costs 0 NOK, with each trip priced individually, so what you pay for is a certified river guide, a drysuit, helmet and PFD that fit properly, and safety kayakers shadowing the raft through the drops. The Stranda and Raundalselvi runs are glacier-fed and genuinely technical — grade III–IV water you cannot legitimately access alone. That guiding is the product. A voss rafting tour pays off for reasonably fit travellers who want one high-adrenaline day rather than another viewpoint photograph, and for groups who will talk about the swim-through rapid for years. It is poor value if you are nervous in cold water, travelling with very small children, or hoping for scenery rather than exertion. Book voss rafting tickets ahead in high summer; walk-up spots go quickly.

What makes it worth it

  • Certified guides and safety kayakers on every descent
  • Drysuit, helmet, PFD included, no rental surprises
  • Grade III–IV rapids inaccessible without professional support
  • Free base entry, pay only per activity
  • Glacier-fed water delivers real whitewater, not a float

Keep in mind

  • Cold glacier melt shocks first-timers regardless of drysuit
  • Requires decent fitness and confidence swimming
  • Peak-summer departures fill fast without advance booking
  • Photography limited — you cannot carry a phone

Bottom line: If you want one day in Voss that your body remembers, book the rafting; if you want views, spend the money elsewhere.

The experience

What visiting Voss Rafting is really like

You pull in at Nedkvitnesvegen 25 in Skulestadmo between 09:30 and 14:30, the window when the morning and afternoon departures stage. You sign the form, hand over your watch, and take a drysuit, fleece liner, neoprene booties, helmet and buoyancy aid from the racks. You change in the shed.

Read more Show less

You walk out damp-footed onto the grass while a guide runs the briefing: forward paddle, back paddle, hold on, and the two commands that matter — down, and swim.

You ride up the valley with the rafts on a trailer, six to a boat. At the put-in you carry your raft to the water, wedge your feet under the thwart, and practise strokes in a slow eddy before the first wave train takes the bow. You paddle. You get soaked inside the first minute. Between rapids the guide spins the boat so you can look up at the birch slopes, then calls you forward again for the next horizon line, a safety kayaker holding station below.

Your Voss rafting tour ends at a take-out downstream, where you haul the boat up the bank. Hot showers wait back at base. Photos from the Voss river rafting run appear on a screen while you dress.

Voss Rafting on the Stranda and Raundal Rivers

Voss rafting runs on glacier-fed rivers like the Stranda, Raundal and Vosso, where snowmelt from the Hardangervidda plateau keeps the current lively through the warm months. Guides from the local elvepadling tradition brief every crew on paddle commands, throw-bag rescue and how to read a Class II-IV rapid before the raft leaves the put-in. Most voss rafting tours combine calmer float sections between the drops, so you get fjord-valley scenery and whitewater in the same run.

Every June since 1998, the town of Voss has handed its rivers over to Ekstremsportveko, a week in which kayakers, paragliders and skydivers arrive in numbers that briefly rival the local population. The festival explains something about the valley.

Voss rafting tours did not appear as a tourist novelty; they grew out of a paddling culture that was already here, on rivers the locals had been reading for decades. Vestland's geography did the rest. Snowmelt from the high plateaus feeds the Stranda and the Raundalselvi through the summer, long after smaller Norwegian rivers have thinned.

The Voss rafting center at Nedkvitnesvegen 25, in Skulestadmo, sits a short drive from the town's railway station on the Bergen line. Its layout is functional rather than ceremonial: a kit store of drysuits and helmets, a briefing lawn, a trailer yard for rafts. The doors stand open from 09:00 to 21:00, seven days a week, and the site itself carries no entrance fee at all — 0 NOK. Voss rafting tickets attach to individual activities instead, which is how most Norwegian river operations are structured. The river, not the building, is the exhibit.

Two watercourses carry most of the traffic. The Stranda offers continuous Class III water with clean recovery pools, which is why Voss rafting family departures are run there rather than on the steeper drops of the Raundalselvi. Guides read the flow daily; a warm week on the Vossaskavlen snowfields can lift levels overnight, and a cold one can drop them by a grade. Safety kayakers shadow the rafts. Drysuits are standard even in August, when the water still leaves the mountains at single-figure temperatures. This is what separates whitewater rafting in Voss from gentler float trips further south: the rivers here are working alpine watercourses, fed by ice, and they are treated as such.

Locals still call it rafting på Voss, and the phrasing matters: the activity belongs to the valley before it belongs to the visitor. Decades of guiding, competition and quiet river stewardship have made Voss rafting Norway's most concentrated whitewater scene, sustained by a population of roughly 15,000 and a rail line that delivers paddlers from Bergen in about an hour. The mountains supply the water. The town supplies everything else.

The river, not the building, is the exhibit.

With kids

Planning Your Voss Rafting Family Adventure

Visiting with children is an accessible experience at this center, where the river environment is specially prepared for younger adventurers. Safe, family-focused voss rafting tours introduce participants to the water through steady, large rafts designed for stability and fun.

Age requirements

Children must be at least 5 years old to participate, and we recommend choosing large, stable rafts rather than two-man options for those under 12.

River safety

While swimming skills are not required, every participant should feel comfortable in the water and must wear the provided helmet, life jacket, and wetsuit throughout the duration of the voss rafting tour.

Equipment for kids

All necessary safety gear, including specialized neoprene footwear and flotation devices, is included with your voss rafting tickets to ensure children remain comfortable in the mountain water.

Tour pacing

Each excursion lasts approximately 3 hours total, with about 1.5 hours spent on the river, allowing plenty of time for calm sections and gentle rapids suitable for younger endurance levels.

Practical preparation

Parents should pack swimwear and a towel for showers, plus thermal underwear if the weather is chilly, ensuring kids stay warm before and after hitting the water.

Cold water, warm sun

We did the afternoon run on the Strandaelvi and the contrast between the July sun and the snowmelt was something else. Our guide explained every rapid before we hit it, so nobody in the boat panicked. Voss rafting lived up to what our hotel host promised

Green valley, loud river

The valley walls are steeper than the photos suggest and the sound of the water bounces off them the whole way down. Drysuits and neoprene boots were provided and I was glad of both. Booking the voss rafting tickets online the night before was enough in mid-June

Snowmelt at full volume

Late May meant high water and the rapids came one after another with almost no flat sections. I could not stop grinning even with a face full of spray. Photos taken from the bank by the safety kayaker arrived by email that evening

Good run, chilly hands

The rafting on the Vosso was well organised and the guide read the lines carefully, but my hands went numb about forty minutes in — ask for pogies if they have them. Everything else, from the shuttle bus to the changing rooms, ran on time. Extremes valley scenery the whole way

Family paddle in August

We took the gentler stretch with two teenagers and a nervous grandmother and it suited all of us. Our guide switched between French and English without missing a beat. The elvepadling here felt properly supervised rather than rushed

Local rivers deliver

I live two hours away and still come back for the Raundalselvi. Water was low and technical in March, more manoeuvring than big waves, which some people prefer. Voss rafting tours are the reason this town keeps its whitewater reputation

Wet, loud, worth it

Booked a voss rafting tour on a grey January morning and the drysuit kept me perfectly warm apart from my face. There was still snow on the ridges above the put-in which made the whole thing feel remote. The swim test in the calm pool was the coldest part

Autumn colours on the water

Yellow birch leaves floating past between rapids made the flat stretches almost as memorable as the whitewater. Our guide talked us through the Norwegian names of each drop, which I liked. Voss rafting on the Strandaelvi is now the highlight of my Norway trip

Solid whitewater day

Water levels were moderate so we had a mix of splashy rapids and a lot of paddling, which the guide was honest about beforehand. Changing facilities were basic but hot showers worked. The whitewater rafting in Voss is clearly run by people who know these rivers

Spring flood run

Early April on the Vosso was fast, cold and slightly terrifying in the best way. Two people fell out on the first big wave and were back in the boat within seconds. If you want Voss adventure activities at their most alive, come when the snow is melting
